Hatyai Loy Krathong: A Celebration of Thai Culture and the Vibrant Spirit of Water
N
Hatyai – This year’s Loy Krathong festival was lively and vibrant across all areas. Unlike previous years, the festival took place outside the monsoon season, bringing cool and comfortable weather with no rain. However, due to lower water levels, some participants had to float their krathongs on the riverbed in certain areas. Despite this, the joyful atmosphere remained intact. The festival was hosted at several key locations in Hatyai, each with unique characteristics that attracted both local and international attendees. The four most notable venues were:
NaKuan Floodgate (Phu-Mi-Nat-Dam-Ri Canal or Canal R.1)
The event took place at the NaKuan Floodgate, where tents were set up to prepare for potential rain. Activities included community stalls, stage performances, and the Miss Noppamas beauty contest. The krathong floating area was well-organized, requiring participants to queue in an orderly manner. On-ground staff ensured safety and provided assistance, both on land and in water, creating a warm and enjoyable atmosphere.
KamLing: A Spectrum of Colors
This location was the highlight of the year, featuring vibrant lights and sound displays around the reservoir. Despite the large crowd, the cool breeze made the experience pleasant. Although there was only one spot for floating krathongs, the surrounding area was filled with stalls and photo opportunities, adding to the festive charm.
Hatyai Municipal Park
This year’s festival at Hatyai Municipal Park was held alongside the "Mootelu Fair," attracting a wide range of attendees, from concert-goers to spiritual enthusiasts and families. Highlights included multiple floating points around the pond, the Miss Noppamas contest, and live performances on the stage set in the middle of the water.
Khlong Hae Floating Market
This venue was the most convenient for tourists, especially visitors from neighboring countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Myanmar, who attended in large numbers. In addition to floating krathongs, visitors enjoyed shopping and exploring one of Hatyai’s most iconic attractions. Activities began in the afternoon and continued into the evening, offering a unique and lively atmosphere.
